This observation was about marketing models and types. Irmeli introduced the tutor and so did we. The class was like well organized and the class started with debriefing about the last lecture they had with some warm questions. The tutor seemingly was prepared but more indebth knowledge was not obvious. The few observation comments about the teaching includes a number of things. For instance, the tutor might night more body language and EYE contact where this was clearly almost absent. More of students acive role of engagement should have been more pulled and pushed or motivated. Simply because there was a sort of boring pattern of teaching but maybe this was due the pattern of lecture content where modelling and personality types were presented and in need of explaination.
I think that the tutor has more extensive knowledge in practice than the theoritical diminsion so may more sort of teaching skills should be implémented so to gain more experience and variety of input content in interesting ways.

ReplyDeleteI think you hit an important cultural issue here: when you look around anywhere in Finland you might notice that Finns tend to speak in public with monotonous voice and very limited body language. Especially men.
I just have to tell you an anecdote I once heard on a lecture in Jyväskylä University. The professor was talking about tolerance of silence in different cultures. He said that Italians can hardly tolerate any silent moments. If the partner isn't talking, they start a conversation even if they don't have anything to say. He continued with other nationalities, and concluded that there are two nationalities with which it is impossible to measure tolerance of silence: Finns and Eskimos. They can stay silent indefinitely, and not get disturbed at all. He could have continued that Finns can also avoid eye contact, and neither partner sees anything odd in it! That is of course only a stereotypy, but especially with older generations it is true that Finns tend to have a very timid way of talking.
If you think of the classes from the point of view of students possibility to learn, not only as teacher's performance, what ideas arise? (reflect to Merja's and Katri's classes on organizing learning)

I hope you'll soon find time to write your next reflections, it's always a good idea to reflect daily, that way there is never a big load of writing waiting.
